Oysters(カキ) and conger eel rice(あなごめし), specialties of the Seto Inland Sea, are abundant in Miyajima and have long been popular seafood delicacies.

・There are many oyster farming rafts around Miyajima.
・They are grown in the nutritious waters off Miyajima, so the meat is packed right into the shell and has a rich flavor.
・They are cheaper than those in Hiroshima city, and are extremely fresh during the peak season.
・The peak season is from January to March.
①Kaki-ya(牡蠣屋)
Located in the middle of the Omotesando shopping arcade, Kakiya is a restaurant that specializes in oyster dishes, with oysters included in almost every menu item.
The grilled oysters, available from October to early May, and raw oysters, available from November to March, are especially recommended.

Oysters caught that day are opened and served after the order is placed. The oysters are harvested in the waters off Miyajima, so they are sweet and creamy.

② Yakigaki no Hayashi(焼きがきのはやし)
Established over 70 years ago, this is the birthplace of grilled oysters in Miyajima.
They use 3-year-old “Jigozen oysters(地御前カキ)” for their grilled oysters. This is the only place in Miyajima where you can taste year-round oysters.

A restaurant famous for its fried oysters from Miyajima.There are about 10 types of oyster dishes, including tempura and curry.
Menu 1: Fried oysters set meal(1,500 yen)

The batter is exquisite, making the most of the Miyajima oysters!
After ordering, the oysters are coated in fine breadcrumbs and deep-fried. The oyster juices that ooze out from the inside are irresistible.

Conger eel rice(あなごめし)
Miyajima’s local cuisine with a history of about 120 years.Each store has different preferences and cooking methods.
・A specialty dish of Miyajima, grilled conger eel served on top of rice cooked in dashi.
・The shallow Hiroshima Bay is rich in food for conger eels. They have been highly valued since ancient times for their excellent fat content.
・Many shops sell conger eel rice bento boxes, so you can enjoy one during or after sightseeing.
① Anagomeshi Ueno(あなごめし うえの)
The original restaurant that invented conger eel rice and spread it nationwide. The conger eel is marinated in a secret sauce and grilled three times, making it very delicious.

Freshly grilled conger eel is placed on rice. The sauce is not too strong, so the deliciousness of the conger eel stands out.

② Fujitaya(ふじたや)
Established in 1902. This restaurant is so particular about natural conger eels that they close on days when the catch is poor. The sauce they use is delicious, and has been passed down since the restaurant’s founding.

A long-established restaurant that focuses on natural conger eel.
They use natural conger eels weighing 100-120 grams each, which taste great.

Located in a residential area of Miyajima, the restaurant may close during tourist season if it sells out.
③ Mametanuki(まめたぬき)
A restaurant at the long-established inn Kinsuikan(錦水館). The style of this dish, which is made by stuffing shredded egg and conger eel on top of sauce-covered white rice and steaming it at high temperature, is unique in Miyajima.

The fluffy steamed conger eel is the highlight.
The whole dish is steamed, so it stays piping hot until the very end.
